Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to potential accidental poisoning, misuse, and overdose. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment. The DEA’s Take Back Day provides an opportunity for thousands of people from across the country to clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in – safely and anonymously – a record amount of prescription drugs every year.

According to the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 20.5 million people misused prescriptions in 2019 alone. The survey also showed that a majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. These alarming statistics is the reason why Prescription Take Back Day is so important to public safety. As a pharmacist, this is a great way to educate your community on the importance of properly disposing their meds and how they can go about it
