EPA 40 CFR & the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA)

Nearly two decades ago, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began raising awareness to the public about the concerning level of pharmaceuticals present in the environment, specifically in our drinking water.  A pharmacy or hospital may have thousands of pharmaceutical items in inventory that could easily enter the waste stream. Prior to the recent implementation of 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) was confusing to many hospitals, pharmacies and healthcare facilities.

40 CFR helps to regulate the handling of hazardous pharmaceutical waste and removes the dual regulations previously in place with the DEA and EPA.  The goal of the latest rulings aims to simplify the management of hazardous-waste pharmaceuticals generated at various health care facilities such as retail pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, ambulance services, military medical logistics facilities, optical and dental providers, veterinary clinics, research labs, reverse and wholesale distributors.  The latest rulings in 40 CFR and 21 CFR aim to prevent the flushing of thousands of tons of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
